The integration between iOS and AirPods & AirPods Pro makes it close to a done decision when choosing wireless IEMs. However that does not imply that there are not some better or cheaper alternatives available in the market. But the fit and noise isolation combined with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) still makes it an excellent contender.

The new features being released in conjunction with iOS 14, make it great pair up with any of the Apple Device lineup.

Sound Quality

Comparing AirPod Pro to standard AirPods, it is clear that these definitely sound better. There is a significantly more bass; largely due to their new noise-isolating design and improved drivers. The overall sound is pleasing and compared to first and second generation AirPods, has more of a balanced feel. But this being said, the AirPods Pro miss the clarity and feel of other similar priced competitors.

The built-in ANC however on the other-hand is excellent, removing the regular drum and noise of Traffic, Chatter and the AC; meaning you do not need to increase the volume to enjoy your music.

Build & Fit

I have always struggled with the fit on regular AirPods; however due to the compression fit, it has been quite comfortable for use. Furthermore, Apple states that the due to specially designed vent system, it should be be comfortable to wear for longer periods as this will equalize pressure on both sides of the earbud. In my own use, I've had no issues using this for extended periods; and have very comfortable .

The AirPods Pro at IPX4 (Sweat and Water Resistant) and as such, make a great workout audio solution. Due to the current pandemic, I have not been able to test this at a Gym, however I have not had any issues when using these whilst working out at home and running outdoors. These are not waterproof, so I would not test them outside when its raining.

Overall the product feels great to the touch and the wireless charging case feels similar with great build quality and no flex.

Connectivity & Battery Life

With Bluetooth 5.0, the device benefits from lower power consumption and therefore gaining better battery life compared to the original AirPods. Apple state you can expect up-to 4.5 hours listening time with a single charge and up-to 3.5 hours talk time.

In my own use, I was able to get close to stated time, but this is slightly less compared to other similar priced wireless in-ear monitors. However, combined with the charging case you can get multiple full charges and a combined total of 24 hours.

The AirPods Pro has one Force Sensor built into the stem of each earbud; allowing customizable control from a single, double, triple press and even a long hold. Then you can also control the AirPods via Siri and physically via the playback device. The one thing I do miss is Volume Control; as I feel uncomfortable to use Siri when I'm outside with other people present and then have to reach for my iPhone change volume.

Price

At $249 (as of Sept 2020); its certainly not cheap and compared to some of the other premium IEMs in the market the value proposition needs to be considered. However the interaction between Apple Ecosystem is a hard line that also takes a serious consideration.

For people not so heavily invested in the Apple EcoSystem, it can be easy to recommend other premium IEMs which potentially similar feature-set.
